Most common laptop problems

27 May 2020

If your laptop is behaving strangely, something is likely not working as it should. Several types of issues and damage can affect how your lap operates and some of them are easy to repair.

Here is a list of the most common problems that can occur on a laptop.

Your computer is overheating

Laptops are sensitive to heat, and poor ventilation can cause your computer to restart or shut down.

To keep your computer from overheating, always place your laptop on a hard, flat surface so that air can easily circulate through the fans. You can also get a ventilated stand to place under your computer.

If your ventilation system or air filter needs cleaning, contact us. A good cleaning will remove dust and prevent your laptop from overheating.

A hard drive issue

A hard drive problem can result in the loss of all data stored on it. A rattling noise means that your hard drive is broken. An older or damaged hard drive may also affect the operation of your computer.

A battery issue

If your computer doesn’t turn on when you start it, check that the battery is charged and properly connected. Your power supply may also be the cause of the problem. If this is the case, the solution is to change the power supply. Contact us to replace it.

If your power supply is working, it may not be producing enough power to turn on your computer. This issue will also require the power supply to be replaced.

A keyboard problem

In many cases, simply cleaning your keyboard can solve your problem. If you have dropped something on your keyboard or dust has accumulated, a good cleaning by our team will get your keyboard back in working order.

If one or more keys on your keyboard are no longer responding, your keyboard needs to be replaced.

A USB or HDMI port issue

If your USB port is unresponsive, check its status in your settings. If the status is functional, restart your computer to use your USB port normally. If your USB port is still not responding, it’s probably damaged and needs to be replaced.

As for the HDMI port, some problems can be fixed quickly by reinstalling or updating your graphics card driver. Also, make sure your HDMI cable isn’t damaged and causing the problem.

Touchpad issues

If your touchpad is no longer working, an outdated or missing driver may be the cause. You can uninstall your driver and reinstall it to fix the problem or search for a new driver on your laptop manufacturer’s website.

Your touchpad may simply be disabled. If this is the case, simply re-enable it in your computer settings.

A damaged hinge

If your laptop hinge is damaged, it’s best to have it replaced by a professional to avoid weakening your laptop or breaking it.
