What should you do if your phone gets wet?

6 July 2020

There’s nothing more frustrating than dropping your phone in water or other liquids. During summer and in warm weather, an accident near the pool can happen quickly.

If your phone has taken an accidental dip or been dropped in a liquid, here are some tips to help you fix it.

Phone immersed in water: steps to follow

If your phone gets immersed in a liquid, the following steps can help you get your phone working again without further damage.

  • Remove your phone from the water or liquid immediately. The longer it is submerged, the greater the damage.
  • If you are able to open your device’s case, remove your battery without turning off your phone. If you cannot remove the battery, remove all sources of power supply and try to turn off your phone.
  • Wipe off any excess water on your phone using a clean, absorbent cloth.
  • If possible, remove your SIM card and SD card if you have one. Leave all ports open for ventilation purposes.
  • Bring us your device so that our experts can completely remove the water before it damages your smartphone’s components.

Avoid doing these things to ensure your phone survives

Some techniques may seem effective in drying your device faster, but these will only damage it further.

First of all, do not use a hair dryer to dry the water faster. The heat will only damage the components and increase the scope of the damage. The same is true if you leave your phone to dry near a heater or in the sun.

Secondly, do not try to operate your phone by pressing several buttons. This will only cause the liquid to penetrate deeper into your device. Similarly, if your phone has switched off, don’t try to switch it back on as this could cause a short circuit.

Does the rice bag trick really work?

Putting your phone in a bag of rice for 72-96 hours seems to be the most popular method of drying out a phone and getting it working again. In some cases, this method may work, but it isn’t foolproof.

If the liquid is deep under the components of your phone, it is possible that rice method won’t dry them out completely. Sometimes the liquid and traces of corrosion are still present even after more than 72 hours in rice.

The best solution to fix a phone that has been submerged is to contact an expert who will be able to dry it out completely and replace the damaged components if necessary.
