The most common Nintendo Switch problems

3 August 2020

There’s nothing more frustrating than not being able to play your favourite games console because of equipment breakdown. Fortunately, it’s usually quite simple to fix a game console. Sometimes you can even fix it yourself in just a few steps.

To help you out, here are the main problems that can occur on the Nintendo Switch system.

The Joy-Con drift

A very common problem that prevents you from playing properly on your console is the Joy-Con moving from its initial position without you touching it. This is called drifting.

This issue is most apparent on the Switch’s early Joy-Cons and is less likely to happen on newer controllers. Fortunately, Nintendo has recognized this issue and is offering free repairs in some countries (including Canada). This is possible even if your warranty period is over. However, it may take up to two weeks for you to receive your repaired Joy-Con.

The Switch no longer powers up

First of all, make sure your Switch is charged. If the problem is not with the battery charge, you can simply do a hard reset of the console. Simply press the Power button on the top of the Switch for 12 seconds. Release and press the power button once. Your console should turn back on.

The Switch won’t read game cards

In most cases, simply removing the game card and reinserting it will fix the problem. If not, it may be that dust or a small object is preventing your Nintendo system from reading your game card. First, check that the gold strips on your game card are clean. If not, gently wipe them with a clean cloth.

Also, check the slot in your console. If you see any object, remove it with small pliers. Avoid blowing into the slot, as you may damage it.

The Switch lacks space

The Nintendo Switch has 32GB of storage space for your digital games. However, you may quickly run out of space to add new games.

To increase the space available on your console, simply add a Micro SD card. The slot for adding this card is on the back of the console.

The Switch screen is cracked

A cracked screen is particularly unpleasant to the eye when you are playing. To avoid this problem, get a screen protector that you can apply over the Switch’s screen. This extra protection will ensure that you never scratch your screen. Moreover, it is easily replaceable if needed.

However, if your screen is already cracked and scratched, you’ll need to have it replaced.

The Switch has dead pixels

Dead pixels are an annoying feature of LCD screens. Unfortunately, there is no other solution than to replace your Switch screen when this problem occurs.

If you have a few dead pixels, Nintendo does not consider this a defect, especially if they are in the corners of your screen or if there are few of them. However, if these pixels are in the middle of your screen or if there are a lot of them, you can contact Nintendo. Depending on your situation, you may be able to get a free repair if your screen is found to be defective.

Other possible Nintendo Switch problems

Other problems can occur with your console over time. If you take good care of your Switch when transporting it and using it, you shouldn’t have too many problems. However, if your Nintendo console does need repair, don’t hesitate to contact our team. Our game console repair specialists will be able to fix your Switch quickly so that your console and Joy-Cons get a new lease on life.
